Summer wouldn’t have the same sizzle without a patriotic concert by your Space Coast Symphony Wind Orchestra. This FREE red, white and blue concert will honor all those who have worn our nation’s uniform. This all-American program will showcase our national heritage, as conductor Aaron T. Collins directs the wind orchestra with music by Mark Piszczek, Eric Whitacre, Lee Greenwood, and marches from “The March King,” John Philip Sousa. The concert features Eric Whitacre’s thrilling Ghost Train. In this highly programmatic work, Eric transforms a story from American folklore of a supernatural locomotive that roars throughout the Western U.S. Rich in special effects and unique compositional techniques, this dynamic piece creates vivid aural images as the train leaves the station and passes through a varied landscape. The concert will also feature the World Premiere of Mark Piszczek’s American Frontier Suite, a new version for wind band which features songs from the Old West and American frontier, including “Bury Me Not on The Lone Prairie,” “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” “Yellow Rose of Texas,” “Red River Valley” and others.
TCHAIKOVSKY 1812 Overture
DAUGHERTY Clarinet Concerto WORLD PREMIERE
SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 6
Jennifer Royals, clarinet
The program opens with Principal Clarinetist, Jennifer Royals performing the world premiere of Vero Beach composer, R. Michael Daugherty’s joyous Concerto for B-flat Clarinet and String Orchestra. We all know and love the iconic ending of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, but when was the last time you heard the entire work? The piece stands out for its grand instrumentation, alternating between tension and exultation, culminating in an apotheotic finale that symbolizes resilience and the conclusion of one of the 19th century’s most defining conflicts. The audience will take a more active role in the finale of the work, providing the cannon fire by popping brown paper bags provided by the orchestra. To conclude the concert, Collins conducts Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony in which the composer, to quote Leopold Stokowski, proves himself to be “a master who was constantly growing in creative imagination and musical self-confidence.” The Sixth transports listeners into the realms of spring, joy, and youthful spirit. However, beneath the surface of its seemingly cheerful melodies lies a deeper exploration of irony.

BEETHOVEN Triple Concerto, Op. 56
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6
Carey Moorman, violin
Isaac Moorman, cello
Lindsay Garritson, piano
Three extraordinary soloists team up for a one of a kind work, Beethoven’s “Triple” Concerto, one of Beethoven’s most soulful, challenging, and charming concertos. When played by musicians of the caliber of Lindsay Garritson, Carey Moorman and Isaac Moorman, Beethoven’s masterful piano trio with orchestra is three times the fun of a solo concerto. In a first, the SCSO is encouraging concertgoers to turn on their cell phones during the performance. Tan Dun’s Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds brings nature to life in a mesmerizing blend of traditional symphonic sounds and recorded birdsong, creating a musical landscape alive with wonder and mystery. This piece is designed to be an interactive effort between the orchestra and the audience by using cell phones to play recorded sounds of bird calls during the performance. Rounding out the program is one of the most famous Symphony’s ever written, Beethoven’s Sixth. Noted for its blissful introduction, birdsong via woodwinds, and rumbling thunder of cellos, Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony embodies the calming charm of the countryside. In a letter to one of his beloved pupils, he wrote, “How happy I am to be able to wander among the bushes and grass, under trees and over rocks, no man can love the country as I love it.”

Before his departure to the “new world,” Dvorák composed his life-affirming Eighth Symphony. It’s an enchanting world of exuberant celebration and quiet, lamenting nostalgia.
