A sextet and quartet encompass a powerful program of chamber works presented by musicians from your Space Coast Symphony Orchestra. Lyricism and drama abound in Brahms’ String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, a rhythmically compact dynamo that charges ahead in high-spirited dance, occasionally pausing to flirt in operatic fashion.The second half features Tchaikovsky’s beloved string sextet, Souvenir de Florence, originally sketched while the composer was visiting Florence, Italy. Despite its minor key, Souvenir de Florence is an ebullient and apparently carefree composition, a last sunny spell before Tchaikovsky’s anguished emotional descent toward the Sixth Symphony (Pathétique). Here we glimpse Tchaikovsky’s neo-classical proclivities.
