Rounding out the program is Christopher Marshall’s Méndez, inspired by the legendary Mexican trumpet virtuoso Rafael Méndez who presented hundreds of trumpet trio concerts across the United States with his two sons, Rafael Jr. and Robert. PERTTU Valor SOUTH US PREMIERE
TCHAIKOVSKY Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy Overture)
PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 5
Fireworks indoors?! Indeed! The quintessential love theme, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy is full of sweeping melodies that perfectly evoke the breathless passion of the two young lovers. When Prokofiev premiered his Fifth Symphony in 1945—conducting it himself in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory—Prokofiev considered it the culminating accomplishment of his career, conceived “as glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit … praising the free and happy man—his strength, his generosity, and the purity of his soul.” Others had even higher praise: after the U.S. premiere by Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony, Prokofiev was pictured on the cover of Time magazine, and Koussevitzky called the work “the greatest musical event in many, many years. The greatest since Brahms and Tchaikovsky! It is magnificent! It is yesterday, it is today, it is tomorrow.” The concert is rounded out with the Southern United States premiere of Daniel Perttu’s Valor, a powerful and lyrical work about heroism, including the battles heroes face.

SULLIVAN Pirates of Penzance
Central Florida Vocal Arts
Gilbert & Sullivan’s pirate ship docks on the Space & Treasure Coast’s when your Space Coast Symphony Orchestra teams up with Central Florida Vocal Arts to present a fully staged production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, a hilarious, hopeful farce following young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates’ way of life and falls for the beautiful Mabel. Frederic’s melodious tones win over the heart of Major-General Stanley’s songbird daughter, Mabel, but when the Pirate King discovers that General Stanley has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing all of his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, an “ingenious paradox” may prevent the budding romance and lead to the death of “The very model of a modern Major-General.” Featuring an incredible cast, don’t miss this incredible production featuring the gorgeous sound of a full orchestra of one of the most beloved comic operas.

CORNEJO Symphony No. 1 WORLD PREMIERE
PISZCZEK Brigit And The Banshee WORLD PREMIERE
RACHMANINOFF Symphony No. 3
Mary Kruger, soprano
Amy Cofield, soprano
This riveting program opens with two thrilling world premieres. SCSO favorites, sopranos Mary Kruger and Amy Cofield return to the stage to present Mark Piszczek’s Brigit and The Banshee, derived from text from the city of Orlando’s first poet laureate, Susan Lilley. The poem is based on Celtic folklore and the legend of the goddess, Brigit, that was later co-opted by the church and would later become a saint. The concert will also feature Lucas Cornejo’s Symphony No. 1. Cornejo, an 18 year old senior from Melbourne High School and a student of Aaron’s penned a powerful and exciting four movement symphony full of sweeping and rousing themes. Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony baffled listeners at its 1936 premiere, but the composer predicted it would one day “be rediscovered … and become a sensational success.” The Symphony No. 3 is unmistakably Rachmaninoff — with soaring melodies, shattering climaxes, and the dark rumblings of his signature Dies irae from the Mass for the Dead. But once the clouds have lifted, the Symphony ends in jubilant, life-affirming exclamations. Hear why this electrifying work is now considered one of the composer’s finest creations.

Isaac Moorman, cello
Jennifer Royals, clarinet
Lindsay Garritson, piano
The program opens with Principal Clarinetist, Jennifer Royals performing the world premiere of Vero Beach composer, R. Michael Daugherty’s joyous Concerto for B-flat Clarinet and String Orchestra. The orchestra welcomes back Grammy winner, Kenneth Fuchs to present the Southeast U.S. Premiere of Quiet in the Land, a Poem for Orchestra, a gorgeous and haunting work inspired by the rolling prairie of the Midwestern United States and the ‘immense arching sky’ under which it sits, cast against the impact of the Second Gulf War which had then recently broken out. Fuchs, a favorite of conductor Aaron Collins, is one of the world’s leading composers and has been hailed as an “exemplar of the recovery of American music.” Three extraordinary soloists team up for a one of a kind work, Beethoven’s “Triple” Concerto, one of Beethoven’s most soulful, challenging, and charming concertos. When played by musicians of the caliber of Lindsay Garritson, Carey Moorman and Isaac Moorman, Beethoven’s masterful piano trio with orchestra is three times the fun of a solo concerto. Closing out the concert, the SCSO will scale the heights of Sibelius’s seventh symphony, the culmination of the composer’s creative journey as a symphonist.
