Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony

July 21, 2012  |  7:00 PM  |  The Scott Center at Holy Trinity, Melbourne
July 22, 2012  |  3:00 PM  |  Trinity Episcopal Church, Vero Beach

William Connell, trombone

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart  |  Overture to the Marriage of Figaro
Henri Tomasi  |  Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra
Sergei Racmaninoff  |  Symphony No. 2

In just four minutes, the bustling Overture to The Marriage of Figaro sets the stage perfectly for the sophisticated and witty four act opera that is to follow. Written in a matter of hours just before the opera’s first performance, Mozart’s main concern appears to have been to give his audience an immediate indication of the opera’s pace, and of the hectic events of the ‘folle journée’ that they were about to witness.  From the first instant, when this music stirs to life, to its sudden explosions of energy, the overture delights all who hear it. The SCSO's own, William Connell presents Henri Tomasi's thrilling Trombone Concerto. Though lasting only a little more than a quarter of an hour, it compacts into its three short movements a wide variety of ideas and effects.  With a whole slew of influences, Tomasi's Trombone Concerto is one of the most exciting and intoxicating Concertos from the 20th Century.   Rachmaninoff 's Second Symphony helped launch the career of this monumental pianist, composer and conductor.  Few romantic works tug at the audience's heartstrings more insistently than this intense work, with its seemingly endless flow of gorgeous melodies, passionate musical outbursts, luxuriant orchestral textures and kaleidoscopic moods, ranging from the exquisite melancholy of the adagio to the joyous exuberance of the finale.  A musical experience on no account to be missed!
