Four of your Space Coast Symphony musicians join to present two important and exciting sting quartets from across the pond. In 1945, upon the war’s conclusion, Britten toured Germany with violinist Yehudi Menuhin to perform recitals for concentration camp survivors. His Second Quartet was written immediately upon his return to England after this life-changing experience. The commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the death of the composer Britten revered above all others - Henry Purcell, also influenced this ravishing and exciting quartet. Ralph Vaughan Williams’s second numbered string quartet was completed in the grim years of the Second World War. During the war years, the composer helped to organize lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery to support the war effort. This quartet was dedicated as a birthday present to a Mrs. Jean Stewart, the violist of the Menges Quartet, who premiered the work at one of these lunchtime concerts. Around this same time, Vaughan Williams had also become interested in film scoring, and connections may often be found between his film and concert music. Don't miss this FREE program featuring two of Britain's finest composers.
